(Core Competency #2: Strategic Management) Three seconds is how long it typically takes to drive across a football field, send a text message, or change the channel on the radio. It’s also the amount of time many drivers (or walkers) are engaged in distracted activities that can impact their safety. We’ve all seen students crossing the street against the light while their faces are buried in their cell phones. We’ve all seen them talking on their phones while carding into a building without noticing the person behind them piggybacking through the door. Building a safety culture on campus with a generation that has never known life without a smart phone or social media is hard. Using a PBS documentary 3 Seconds Behind the Wheel, this session focuses on the challenges, opportunities and evolving best practices needed to raise awareness of the hazards of cell phone distractions on campus.

As a result of participating in this session, attendees will:

+ Understand the impact of cell phone distractions on campus safety
+ Become familiar with resources for increasing awareness of distracted driving/walking
+ Learn about best practices and policies for managing the hazards of cell phone distractions
